Outreach
Students on the TSM DTC are actively involved in promoting science and sharing their passion with the general public through various outreach activities. These range from producing educational materials and filming engaging science demonstrations, to writing and presenting talks for various audiences. Besides informing the public of TSM research, their projects educate TSM students in communicating complex ideas - a crucial skill in any academic career. The students are trained and guided through their public engagement events by the outreach officer Nicholas Harrigan. Although the main training sessions take place during the second to fourth years of the DTC, some students have also opted to take part in outreach activities during their first year.
Students from the first TSM cohort recently took part in an
outreach event at EPSRC Polaris House in Swindon on 29 April 2010.
Using demonstrations, video footage, and their sharpened
communication skills, the students introduced EPSRC staff to the
science behind materials of the future.
