Objectives
After attending the course, the students should be able to
-
Describe qualitatively and quantitatively the concept of
cooperative phenomena in disordered and equilibrium systems
and give examples hereof.
-
Describe qualitatively and quantitatively the concept of
fractals.
-
Describe qualitatively and quantitatively the concept of
phase transitions, scaling, and universality.
-
Apply scaling arguments to systems at a phase transition and
be able to derive scaling relations.
-
Define and outline the procedure of real space renormalisation
group transformation and it's relationship with scale invariance.
-
To discuss and implement the Landau
theory of (2nd order) phase transitions to equilibrium systems at#
or close to a critical point.
-
Describe qualitatively and quantitatively the concept of
self-organisation in nonequilibrium systems.
-
Describe qualitatively and quantitatively the concept of
self-organised criticality.
-
Describe the fundamental conceptual difference between scaling in
disordered and equilibrium systems at a phase transition and nonequilibrium
systems displaying self-organised criticality.
